Policies: Submission of Work Policy
MARY MACKILLOP
CATHOLIC REGIONAL COLLEGE
SUBMISSION OF WORK POLICY (YEARS 7-10)
Rationale
At Mary
MacKillop Catholic Regional College it is expected that students will meet the
deadlines and due dates for work that are set by teachers. Most students realise
the benefits of being organised and choose to meet this expectation.
In
order to assist students as much as possible to meet the expectation that work
is submitted on time, teachers will take all reasonable steps to take the
overall workload of students into consideration when setting due dates. It is to
be expected that this workload must increase to some degree, but not
excessively, towards the end of a semester.
However,
in some cases and for a variety of reasons some students do not submit work by
the due date.
Only
for very good reasons will a deadline be extended, so students are encouraged to
plan their time effectively to make sure work is completed and submitted by the
time it is due.
Where
required, reasons for failure to submit work on time must be provided to the teacher in the
form of a note signed by parents/guardians. This note should provide the reasons
for the request rather than simply asking for the student to be granted an
extension. Good manners would dictate that this note is provided as soon it
becomes apparent that a student is at risk of not meeting a deadline or at the
first opportunity after an absence.
Reasons
for granting extensions would normally be limited to cases of absence on the due
date due to illness, family trauma or similar unforeseeable absences. In the
case of Integration or special needs students alternative arrangements will, in
most cases, already have been made.
Students
are expected to plan their study routines to cater for foreseeable influences
such as part-time work, sports training, GIS events, Music lessons, family
holidays, etc. It would be rare for an extension to be granted for these types
of events.
Procedures
The
following procedures apply to all due dates:- either the originally specified
date or a negotiated due date in the case of an extension be granted.
•
On the day the work is due.
When an assessment task is not submitted at the beginning of the lesson
in which it is due
AND no written request for an extension is made
OR the teacher refuses the request for an extension,
the student’s parents will be informed, via a note in the student
planner, of the urgent need for their child to complete the task and submit it
as soon as possible.
•
Subsequent to the due date.
Even though the date will have passed and the following consequences will
be applied, students are still expected to submit the work. When the student
comes to submit the work they must present the planner with the note from the
teacher signed by the parent/s. The teacher will not accept the work if the note
in the planner has not been signed by the parent/s.
The student will receive ‘NA’ (Not Assessed) for the task, provided
it is submitted before the task is graded and returned to the rest of the class.
The work will be assessed to the point of satisfactory completion and receive ‘S’
but will be graded ‘NA’.
If the work is submitted after the assessment task has been returned to
the class, or not submitted at all, the student will receive ‘N’ for the
task.
If the work is not submitted at all, then the relevant Sub School
Coordinator will also be informed so appropriate disciplinary action can be
followed.
The ‘N’ will be explained in the comments of the semester report.
•
Students who are absent on a due date
These students are required to submit assessment tasks to their subject
teacher directly or to the office on the day they return to school.
If the note explaining the
absence is not in the student’s planner a copy of the note provided to the
homeroom teacher should accompany the student’s work.
Assessment tasks not submitted until the next class (unless this class is
held on the same day as the day of return to school) will be considered late and
the procedures outlined in the previous dot point will apply.
•
For reporting purposes
‘NA’ will be counted as an ‘E’ when it
needs to be averaged with
other grades to form part of an overall grade. However, where ‘NA’ is
received for a task that is not part of an averaged grade, ‘NA’ should
appear on the report. In both instances, the late submission of work will be
mentioned in the teacher’s report comment.
