Principal's Message
From the Principal.
At Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College, South Gippsland we believe in, and work for, the education of the
whole person in our Catholic faith. We trust in the action of God in our midst.
No training in mere knowledge.
"Catholics do not believe that the education of a child is like a thing of mechanism that can be put together
bit by bit. Now a morsel of instruction on religion, and then of instruction in secular learning - separate parcels
with as little reciprocal action as have two books on the shelves of a library. We hold that subjects taught, the
teachers and their faith, the rules and practices of the school day - all combine to produce the result which we
Catholics consider to be education, and that this desirable result cannot be looked for without some combined action…
The human beings teaching will, by reason of their religious faith, and other qualities, influence the human beings
taught; the day with its work and devotions, arranged on a plan consistent with our faith, will mould one form of
character, the day not so arranged will produce another."
- Bishop John Bede Polding, 1861.
Catholic schools have been a major component of Australian education for over 175 years. During that time they have
adapted to changing circumstances and changing times. However, despite changing circumstances and changing times,
Catholic schools have always, and will continue to "offer the Catholic community and the peope of Australia an
educational foundation for life to the full, meaning the full development of the person - intellectually, spiritually,
physically, morally and emotionally."
- National Catholic Education Commission, 2000
... and so a consistent theme of Catholic education continues.
Our College is proud to play its part, both in South Gippsland and the wider international context, in continuing the
story of Catholic education. My thanks go to everyone who has contributed to the story of this College thus far, students,
parents and staff members. I believe that this College community is well positioned to head into the next five years with
the confidence that comes from knowing that very strong roots have been put down.
Our efforts will be rewarded in God's way and in God's time.
