Curriculum: Religious Education

Chapel sketch 1996 by Michelle Harle

The spiritual centre of Mary MacKillop College is our beautiful Chapel, which provides an enriching atmosphere for liturgical celebrations and a serene environment for prayer and reflection. The Chapel enhances and extends the Religious Education Programme within the College. This programme is based on guidelines for Religious Education which have been endorsed by Bishop Coffey for use in Catholic Schools in the Sale Diocese. At Mary MacKillop College the Religious Education faculty is responsible for implementing these Guidelines and developing programmes that are stimulating and informative and nurture personal and spiritual growth. Years 7 – 10 students are involved in a variety of Religious Education units including Sacred Scripture, Sacraments, Liturgy, Prayer, Church History, Social Justice, Personhood, Judaism and other World Religions.

Years 11 and 12 the students complete Religious Education units from the VCE course. The VCE units offered at Mary MacKillop are Texts and Traditions and Religion and Society. The VCAL unit ‘Ministry’ is also offered.

A further dimension of the Religious Education programme is the Retreat Camps run for students in Years 10 to 12. These camps offer students the opportunity for personal reflection, spiritual growth, liturgical celebrations and community building.

The Family Life Education programme enhances the personal development and sexuality components of the programme.
