Curriculum: Middle School - Years 9 & 10

YEAR 9

Year 9 is traditionally one of the most challenging years for students. It requires a carefully tailored program that is both relevant and stimulating, that meets and exceeds the many demands and expectations of this year level.

The Year 9 program maintains the stability and structure gained through the study of core and elective subjects. It is enhanced through the integrated Arts and Technology curriculum entitled “Specialist Skills and Projects”. Through the Specialist Skills program, run during Terms 1, 2, and 3, students develop skills in varied areas of Arts and Technology. The Projects phase, the entire Term 4, involves students in specific, large scale projects designed to allow them to use and enhance many of the skills gained throughout the year in all aspects of the curriculum.

Core Electives Specialist Skills Units
Religious Education L.O.T.E. Music
English S.O.S.E. Horticulture
Mathematics Materials Technology (Wood)
Science Catering
Physical Education/Health Art
Design

The Year 9 curriculum is further complimented by “Big Day Outs”, a set of excursions designed to promote learning outside the bounds of the classroom and to allow students to gain experiences they may otherwise not obtain. At the end of the year students are able to further consolidate the knowledge and growth they have strived for over the year when they travel to the Year 9 Camp. The focus of the three day camp is co-operation, community and celebration.

YEAR 10

At Mary MacKillop College we have designed a curriculum that allows students to explore a range of subjects related to their interest and vocational aspirations, whilst at the same time, maintaining a breadth of subjects that enable students to keep their options open. As well as compulsory studies in Religion, English, Mathematics, Physical Education and Information Technology, students are able to elect subjects from the Arts, Technology, Science, SOSE and Health learning areas.

Year 10 is very much a preparation for the VCE and VCAL and our Year 10 curriculum empowers the students with the knowledge and skills to make informed and appropriate subject choices as they enter their Senior Years.

Currently the school offers the following courses.

Core Electives (Semester Length)
English S.O.S.E
Religious Education Health
Mathematics L.O.T.E
Physical Education Technology
Science

To ensure all students maintain a broad curriculum there are minimum requirements that students must undertake in each Learning Area.
